Sorry, this is a bit later than planned. But, here it is! (Keep in mind that this is a fictional story. Grandpa and Grandma aren't this crazy.)
The Camping Surprise.....Continued!
When we got back to our campsite it was totally trashed. Chairs were strewn all over the place, wood had been kicked out of the fireplace, and all the food was gone. Luckily, as we found from examining the wreckage, nothing was hopelessly broken."What happened?" asked Elijah.
"It must have been the bear," I said. Everyone agreed.
"We'll have to search for it," Grandpa said. "Caroline, Elijah and Grandma stay at the camp and clean up. I'll take the rest of them to find the bear."
"Aaaww," Caroline and Elijah whined. "We want to come."
"No, I need you two to stay and protect Grandma in case the bear tries to get her," Grandpa told them.
"Okay," they replied, their faces grave with their important assignment.
"Everybody got that?" Grandma checked. We all nodded.
We started off wearing empty backpacks. Grandpa went up ahead. I saw huge footprints scattered across the ground, mingled with some strange things, like a few half-eaten pieces of beef jerky, crumbs and bits of a blueberry muffin, and some trampled oatmeal and hot cocoa packets. We picked the packets up and put them in our backpacks.
"I thought that bears were carnivores," Josh wondered. "Why would they eat a muffin?"
"They're actually omnivores," I said. "In fact, they eat more plants than meat."
"Shh..." Aly said. "I hear something." We stopped and listened. It sounding like snoring. We crept toward the sound. We stepped out of the woods into a sunlit clearing with a few clumps of snow on the ground. A bear was lying in the middle of it with opened and unopened boxes of food lying alongside it.
"Alright, here's how its going to work," Grandpa whispered, bending low to meet our level. "One at a time, one of us will go up to the bear, grab an unopened box of food, and sneak back here with it in your backpack. Don't use the zippers, especially near the bear. We don't want him to wake up. Aly, you first."
Aly snuck up to the bear, grabbed a wrapped box of chocolate muffins, and quietly snuck back. She was followed by me, Josh, Henry, and finally Grandpa. After a few rounds in this order, Grandpa called us together and whispered, "We're down to the last few boxes of food. I'll go grab the rest, and then we'll very quietly sneak away. Don't make any..."
Suddenly, the bear growled. It rolled over and sat up. Henry trembled and I grabbed him to keep him from bolting. I was shaking myself. "Don't run," Grandpa whispered urgently. "Very slowly back away. Don't make any noise."
"Okay," we whispered. We obeyed his instructions and backed away. When we were out of sight and earshot of the bear, we ran back to the campsite. We were panting when we got back. We told our story to Grandma, Caroline, and Elijah.
"I'm glad I didn't go," said Caroline, shuddering.
Elijah scoffed. "That isn't scary! I could wrestle that bear to the ground!" He boasted. We smiled.
"Camping with Grandma and Grandpa is always an adventure," I said.
