Next to home is a drainage pond where water collects from all around it and allows it to drain slowly and not overwhelm the sewer system. Sometimes the drain gets clogged with leaves and branches and the water can’t drain and so it backs up and fills up the pond. Grandpa Hardy then get to try and reach through the water to the drain to clear it and allow the water to go out.
This last week, with all the rain we’ve had, it’s been backed up quite a bit. Tuesday he noticed that not only was the pond full, but that water was running over the top and down to the sidewalk in a river. He decided it was time to take a cold plunge. He got on his water shoes and shorts and used a hoe and a stick to balance himself and find ground. He waded in up near the concrete culvert and could reach down with the hoe to try and blindly clear the drain. The water slowly started to recede. Sorry I didn’t think to take a picture at the fullest point, or of the river, but once it had drained about 2 to 3 feet down, I took this picture of him standing in the water.
You’ll notice a tree trunk floating off to the right and then by the end it got lodged and water was flowing under it. Thanks to grandpa for keeping our neighborhood from floating away!

There is the top of the culvert :) |

Finally! He can see most of the drain and can reach it with his hands to clear the leaves away! |
