Let there be light
And God said, Let there be light.
And God divided the light from the darkness.
And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called night.
And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years.
To give light to the earth, … and to divide the light from the darkness
Genesis 1:3, 4, 5, 14, 17, 18
But it does not say that those seasons and days and light and darkness would be the same across the world. Which was demonstrated very well last night.
A little after 6:00 pm Tahiti time, 8:00 pm Portland time, Jon and Anneli called us on FaceTime. We could see that it was evening there in Portland. Still light enough to see easily, but you could tell that the sun was going down. For us in Tahiti, 2 time zones away, so 2 hours earlier in our day, it was dark outside. The sky was black.
Jon quickly pointed out that it is winter in Tahiti and summer in Portland because we are in different hemispheres. Another thing that plays into it is how close we are to the equator. Also, most of the US uses Daylight Savings Time, but Tahiti does not.
The graphic above shows the sunrise and sunset times for Tahiti and Portland for last Saturday.
For the curious among us, here are the shortest and longest days for locations that are important to our family.
It is amazing to me that the longest and shortest days in Tahiti are only 2 hours different, while in Seattle the length of a day almost doubles, increasing 7 ½ hours!
Isn’t the world that God gave us wonderful!
